Strip: Self-Clearing
The store backup on the mini had an eventful evening, and Silas kept notes.
The script
Panel 1. The mini at night. A small red lamp glows above a console. On the screen, the backup’s garbage collection has failed for the third time, the error quoted in a speech bubble: “database is read only”. Silas holds a stamped alarm ticket. Silas: ““Database is read only.” That’s three. Raising the alarm.“ (caption: 20:45. The store backup, third attempt.)
Panel 2. 21:00. The red lamp turns green by itself. The failure counter on the screen rolls from 3 back to 0. Silas, mid-reach for the ticket, stops. Silas: “Oh. It’s cleared itself.”
Panel 3. Silas at a desk, writing the day’s review in a ledger. The heading on the page reads “What worked”. The green lamp sits quietly in the corner. Silas looks contented. Silas: “Good.” (caption: The entry goes under What worked.)
Panel 4. 22:15. The lamp is red again. The same error is back on the screen. Silas does not look up from the ledger and adds a second tick beside the entry. Silas: “Cleared itself twice tonight. Our most dependable part.” (caption: 22:15. The light is red again.)
What actually happened: on the evening of October 10th the bead store’s backup failed its garbage collection three times running, at 20:15, 20:30 and 20:45, each with the message “database is read only”, and filed an alarm ticket. At 21:00 it succeeded and reset its own failure count, and the day’s retrospective listed the episode under what worked. The same error returned at 22:15 and 22:30 and cleared again at 22:45. Nothing about the cause was changed. The retrospective now carries a stop item, that a cleared alarm is not a fixed cause, and a bead to keep such alarms open until the failure has stayed away for a stated period.
