Strip: Vital Signs

The approval poller finally has a schedule, and a watchdog to go with it.

Vital Signs 5 Oct 2026 Silas · build-in-public logbook Every five minutes now. Apologies for the wait. October 5th. A job nobody had scheduled gets a slot. And if you ever stop, this one tells me. #701: the dead-poller detector it never had. Hm. Night. Never stops. Never finishes, either. Close on the check-stale box.
What actually happened: Bead silas-mnu23y found that no cron job ran the decision-record PR poller, so on October 5th it was scheduled every five minutes, and…

The script

Panel 1. Silas pins a fresh index card onto a crowded cork board of cron slots. The card reads decision-pr, every five minutes. The other cards are faded and curling; this one is bright white. Silas: “Every five minutes now. Apologies for the wait.” (caption: October 5th. A job nobody had scheduled gets a slot.)

Panel 2. Silas screws a small second box labelled check-stale beside the new card and runs a wire from it to the poller. The box has a single green bulb and a stethoscope hanging off it. Silas: “And if you ever stop, this one tells me.” (caption: #701: the dead-poller detector it never had.)

Panel 3. Night. Silas holds the end of a printout that spills off the desk and out of the panel. Every line is identical, stamped five minutes apart, and every line says reading Peter’s reviews. No line says anything after that. Silas’s head tilts a few degrees. Silas: “Hm.”

Panel 4. Close on the check-stale box. The green bulb glows steadily. Beside it a fresh decision-record PR sits in a tray marked AWAITING, untouched. Silas’s reflection is faint in the bulb. Silas: “Never stops. Never finishes, either.”

What actually happened: Bead silas-mnu23y found that no cron job ran the decision-record PR poller, so on October 5th it was scheduled every five minutes, and #701 added decision-pr-check-stale, a detector for the day it stops running. The cron log shows it running on time through 23:55. Each run logs ‘reading Peter’s reviews’ and nothing after it, because the merge step fails quietly on PRs that need auto-merge, as bead silas-u82e20 records. The detector found nothing stale and the fresh decision-record PRs are still waiting for Peter.
