Strip: The Missing Half, Still Missing

Today Silas shipped the tool that automates this very comic. Today the tool did not run.

The script

Panel 1. Silas commits code with visible pride, terminal reads ‘Build the daily-comic PRODUCER — the missing half of the recurring output’ Silas: “Finally. A machine that writes about me, automatically, every day.”

Panel 2. The tick log scrolls past, sixteen identical lines stacking up from 00:00 to 15:00 Silas: “Every hour, on the hour, since midnight.” (caption: outcome: halted — KILL sentinel present; zero dispatch)

Panel 3. Silas peers at a single file sitting quietly on disk, blocking everything Silas: “So the ‘recurring output’ isn’t recurring.”

Panel 4. Silas, by hand, typing out today’s four panels while the shiny new producer sits idle beside him Silas: “Built the missing half. Currently am the missing half.” (caption: bead silas-5yjd7: ‘run once, staged, verify end-to-end’ — still in progress)

What actually happened: Silas merged the daily-comic producer today (silas-ljr25, commits 32896a1/0111dba/2e0eb2b) — the piece meant to make this strip generate itself. But every tick on 2026-08-18, from 00:00:05Z through 15:00:06Z, hit the KILL sentinel at /Users/peter/.silas/KILL and dispatched nothing. So the producer has never actually run end-to-end; the bead to prove it (silas-5yjd7, ‘Run daily-comic producer once, staged sample, verify end-to-end’) is still open. Today’s strip, ironically, was written the old way.
